With the recent IPO of Alibaba, online supplier directory providers are popping out left and right. Since it cost next to nothing to build a database of commodity suppliers it's no wonder the recent preponderance of Alibaba-wannabes.
We at AllWorldSourcing.com beg to differ. We believe we are the better to source - read on to see why!

I recently came across this press-release about a website called MFG.com. http://www.bizjournals.com/atlanta/stories/2008/01/14/newscolumn5.html
It's amazing (and great!) to see MFG, who basically does what we do, but for a very specific niche market - machined products.

My observations from attending the Global Sources trade shows in Hong kong from Oct 12-15, 2007. There were actually 2 shows going on at the same time, the Electronic and Components tradeshow and the Fashion Accessories tradeshow at AsiaWorld Expo in Hong Kong.

China Sourcing Fairs - Big business!

I am amazed at the number of China "sourcing" fairs and trade shows there are out there. For example, according to Global Sources' Q2'07 earnings announcement (August 9), the company announced that it would increase the number of tradeshows that it would host from 21 in 2007 to 28 in 2008. That's more than 2 sourcing fairs a month just from Global Sources! There are numerous other "sourcing fairs" and "sourcing tradeshows" all year round sponsored other entities such as Alibaba, Hong Kong Trade Development Council, and etc.

Spent most of the day packing and getting everything ready for the trip. I did some research online about tradeshows and Hong Kong in general, and found out that the fall timeframe (Sept to Dec) is the peak tradeshow season in Hong Kong / Asia due to the more temperate weather. Being near the equator, Hong’s weather is typically hot and humid throughout the year, except for the Fall/Winter season. That in mind, I decided to pack all my suits and only a few “casual” wear. Getting really excited about the trip now!

Today I confirmed my travel arrangements with my travel agent, I will be flying to Hong Kong from San Francisco on Oct 10th, in time to attend the 2 tradeshows sponsored by Global Sources from Oct 12-15 and also one sponsored by Hong Kong Trade Development Council from Oct 13-16. Total cost for airfare and hotel accommodations ran about $2,500 for economy tickets and 8 days of accommodations at a “3.5 star” hotel in Hong Kong. My budget for the entire trip including transportation, meals, and incidentals is roughly $3,500. Here are my plans:

Arrival In Hong Kong

What a day. It’s amazing to see that a good part of HK International airport is plastered with ads by Alibaba (general ads marketing its website) and Global Sources (ads focused on the 2 tradeshows). It’s getting really obvious that tradeshows is a big deal in Hong Kong. In fact, I read somewhere today that 5.2 million people will visit Hong Kong to attend various tradeshows. No doubt it’s a big part of the local economy! Anyway, having spent the morning napping as I was completely jet lagged, so I didn’t venture out of my hotel until well into the afternoon. There are many foreigners walking around – no doubt to attend the show tomorrow as I am. The underground subway system is amazing – it’s clean, sophisticated, and surprisingly convenient. One can seemingly get to any part of Hong Kong and Hong Kong island on it. At the urging of a ticket attendant, I purchased an Octopus card – everyone seemed to have one of these ATM-like card where you pre-fund the card with cash and then swipe it to go through the subway stations and even make purchases at many local shops with one swipe of the card - priceless! In short, the area is vibrant and packed with locals, tourists, tour buses, and tons of high end shopping. My wife would totally love this place!
